Introduction to Indian Aesthetics Course

This is a 90mins class and will be conducted over Microsoft Teams.

This course will provide a space to connect and bring people together whilst learning about Indian aesthetics through its arts-crafts and doing an activity mindfully to increase a feeling of well-being and creative revitalisation. It will be taught in an informal and interactive format, with presentations shared on screen. There will be a 5 mins break in the middle of the session.

This course acts as a primer to lectures, workshops and courses on Madhubani Painting, Gond Painting and Indian Miniature Painting. It will also be of interest to anyone who loves Indian food, practices wellness through yoga and ayurveda, is interested in Bollywood, Indian history, architecture and travels through India.

India is a continuous living civilisational-state spanning many thousand years. It is big and extremely diverse, both geographically and culturally. This gives rise to a staggering number of arts-crafts, incorporating great variety in terms of techniques, representation styles, purpose of creation and use. Yet there is an underlying unity in its philosophy, aesthetics & story-telling that emerges from Hindu perception of the cosmos and life. This course introduces and explores this theme over six topics.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Understand the core of Hindu aesthetics
• Describe at least two differences between Hindu and European aesthetics
• Identify primary message of Hindu aesthetics in different arts-crafts
• Discuss the worldwide influence of Hindu aesthetics
• Gain confidence in asking questions and taking part in group discussion-activities
