Arts and Crafts of India have been prized globally from ancient times till today, with commodities like cotton, muslin, ivory and aromatics in high demand amongst many other artisanal products. In the west, Roman writer Pliny (CE 23-79) complained of the cost of luxury commodities imported to Europe from India. He stated that “Not a year passed in which India did not take fifty million sesterces away from Rome!”. The fame of Indian handmade textiles, embroideries and prints continued during the European colonisation of India from the 1600s. Even today, the international fashion and design vocabularies heavily borrow from Hindu-Indian aesthetic & themes.
The lecture highlights the dominant place of Indian heritage arts-crafts in this space and will be of interest to professional painters, graphic designers, printers, photographers, fashion and textile enthusiasts, interior designers, wedding planners plus anyone who has an eye for design, enjoys visiting museums and galleries, and students who want to incorporate exciting aesthetics into their portfolios.
